User Onboarding

User onboarding is the guided process of helping new users learn a product and reach their first meaningful success as quickly as possible.

Onboarding spans everything between signup and the moment a user clearly 'gets it': welcome screens, setup checklists, tooltips, sample data, empty states, and the first emails. The goal is to shorten the path to the product's core value, often called the 'aha moment', while removing friction and confusion along the way.

Good onboarding directly affects activation and retention. Users who reach value early are far more likely to stick around, while a confusing first run is one of the most common reasons people churn before they ever experience what a product can do. Because it shapes first impressions, onboarding is a high-leverage place to invest.

Onboarding is also a rich source of feedback. Watching where new users stall, drop off, or ask for help reveals exactly which steps are unclear. Capturing that early feedback, then iterating on the flow, turns onboarding from a one-time setup into a continuously improving experience.
